Bat Speed Training:
Per a study by DeRenne, Buxton, Hetzler and Ho of the University of Hawaii, published in the Journal Of Strength and Conditioning Research, "bat velocity is a major mechanical characteristic of a good hitter." Increased bat swing speed results in increased batted-ball velocity (ie, how far the ball travels). And the researchers established that bat swing speed can be increased by resistance training.
Sixty Division 1-A collegiate varsity-level players participated in the study. Those that saw the most improvement in swing speed alternated heavy, then light, then standard weighted bats
- 10 swings per set for 5 sets, with no more than 15 seconds rest between each 10-swing set
- 3 total sets (for a total of 150 swings) with 30 seconds rest between each full set
This created nearly 10% increase in bat speed.
